Gliding Stars of Western New York
P.O. Box 954
Grand Island, NY 14072
Gliding Stars is an organization that allows individuals who may have a disability the opportunity to explore their interest in ice skating. Elizabeth M. O'Donnel is a figure skater who founded this organization in 1994. "She did this so that they could experience a part of normal life and the life-changing effects of regular exercise, social interaction, teamwork, family sharing and a few hours of fame during the end-of-season Ice Extravaganza Performance." (www.glidingstars.org)
This organization provides adaptive equipment such as walkers and ice skates to it’s participants based on their personal needs. The walkers they provide are designed for children who are just beginning to skate, whom are able to weight bear for a limited time, those that need assistance from teachers or volunteers, and those that do not have the ability to bear weight and need straps in order to maintain their posture and position. The ice skates are adaptive skates made by “Reidell Shoe Company.” These skates accommodate a variety of challenged a skater may have such as those that “wear ankle-foot orthosis” (www.glidingstars.org) or another form of a brace. They accommodate to your child’s special needs and come in a variety of sizes. “In addition to these custom-designed items, Gliding Stars can provide helmets, supportive harnesses and other related items.” (www.glidingstars.org)
